In recent years, UBD has seen a research boom through its initiatives to increase its research and collaborations. UBD has developed a large number of graduate scholarships to build itself into a research-intensive university, and also to expand and enhance the quality of graduate programmes and graduates. The university provides exciting opportunities for graduate scholarships to aspiring academicians from Brunei and the world to undertake graduate studies and research in UBD. In addition, UBD also creates opportunities for fruitful collaborations between UBD and its international partners for academic and student mobility through exchange programmes and fellowship programmes. The research funding and research facilities at UBD have developed tremendously consequently, leading to a significant increase in graduate students and collaborators coming to UBD to undertake research.

With the massive academic mobility and a number of internationalisation strategies including increased joint academic programmes, research collaborations and networks such as iCUBE and Borneo Studies Network (BSN), UBD’s active partnerships with institutions worldwide have brought increased international students and staff coming to UBD and thus, contributed to the tremendous improvement in campus life, teaching and research output at the university. Meanwhile, the Kuala Belalong Fields Study Centre (KBFSC) remains UBD’s signature research facility for biodiversity and environmental research, with the research centre located in Temburong district.

Our state-of-the-art faculties and research centres


As a graduate school, SHBIE offers graduate programmes featuring high quality instruction and an academic curriculum designed to raise teaching standards and support effective school systems. With the support of experienced educational professionals, SHBIE ensures the courses offered reflect the latest theory and research in the field of education. SHBIE is unwavering in its commitment to shape the future by educating its students to become teachers of quality trained in the best practices. The Institute’s main purpose is the preparation of school teachers and educational administrators. It provides introductory courses to specialized educational roles such as guidance and counselling, remedial teaching and curriculum design. Professional education of teachers is an on-going process, starting off with the initial phase of training and continues throughout the teachers’ careers through their participation in upgrading and in-service courses. The Institute gives high priority to the upgrading of teacher’s qualifications and the provision of short professional courses.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is the largest faculty in Universiti Brunei Darussalam with about 1,000 students and 80 staff. FASS offers ten major programmes at undergraduate level, each of which are also available in Masters and PhD. The programmes include Art and Creative Technology, Bahasa Melayu & Lingustik, English Language and Linguistics, Environmental Studies and, Professional Communication and the Media and Sociology-Anthropology. FASS is committed to producing a student-centric educational experience and allowing for innovative teaching and learning, which go beyond the traditional lecture. Students in the faculty are actively involved in doing presentations, going on field trips, organizing events and using online methods such as social media as part of their learning.
Faculty of Science provides students with a wide spectrum of academic opportunities under six major disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Applied Physics and Mathematics. Faculty of Science offers degrees from undergraduate to doctorate level. Along with the state-of-the-art facilities, the faculty largely consists of experienced and well qualified academics from all over the world. Also, our degrees are highly regarded by various academic institutions overseas.
UBD School of Business and Economics offers business and management education, economics and accountancy training. UBDSBE programmes are customised to produce graduates with marketable skills and leadership qualities in line with the contemporary needs of organisations in an increasingly competitive and globalised world. The Faculty collaborates closely with regional and international renowned universities through faculty/student exchanges, research partnerships and networks, joint publications and global engagement.
Formerly known as Institute of Medicine, PAPRSB IHS acquired its present name after its integration Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah College of Nursing with the Institute of Medicine. PAPRSB IHS places heavy emphasis in the vital field of medical research with three research clusters in Cancer, Obesity and Aging. Students at the Institute are given early clinical and laboratory exposure to attain greater experience in the field of health sciences. The Institute’s priority is to instil greater inter-professional teamwork and communication skills; skills that are important for achieving and maintaining high quality and effective health care.
Inaugurated in 2012, FIT emphasises a quality design-centric broad-based engineering education with innovative curriculum and cutting edge engineering research. The undergraduate GenNext engineering curriculum has been developed through collaborative works with world leading technological universities namely: Stevens Institute of Technologies in the United States; and Zhejiang University in China. For its research, FIT actively collaborates with world-class universities.
The Academy of Brunei Studies was established as a multi-disciplinary centre of study and research covering all aspects of life in Brunei Darussalam. APB is also one of the most vibrant and dynamic, providing a lively, informed academic environment in which undergraduate and graduate students are able to thrive. The multi-disciplinary nature of the Academy is reflected in the diverse range of modules offered, ranging from Languages, Literature (traditional and modern) to Politics, Malay Islamic Monarchy and Islam and Sociocultural Studies.
Through its graduate degree program on public policy and management, the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) facilitates applied public policy research and delivers trainings in policy areas. It draws on academics from all faculties at UBD and policy experts from Brunei Darussalam and overseas to offer a unique cross-disciplinary learning and research environment to local, regional and international students as well as the research community. IPS pursues five strategic aims: (i) advanced research on mainstream and specialized public policy areas; (ii) Graduate degree program on Public Policy and Management; (iii) Training in policy arenas; (iv) Conference, Seminar and publication; and (v) Networking and institutional collaboration.
Starting off as a Centre for Teaching English, the Language Centre (LC) has grown to include a range of languages and currently teaches over 2,000 students each semester. The Centre now offers courses in Arabic, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Borneo Languages. Using a wide range of teaching methodology to cater to different learning styles, the LC organises learning activities and projects involving the use of technology, games, cultural festival, foreign film nights and interactions with various embassies, to name a few. The LC enjoys enormous support from various embassies and high commissions in Brunei Darussalam.
The Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) is an enabler for innovative approaches towards continuing education, professional development and blended learning. The Centre offers a range of blended learning courses from full-fledged undergraduate degree, BSc in Digital Economy to 14-week Short Courses, and foundational academic programmes that serve as a gateway to UBD’s undergraduate GenNEXT degree programmes.

Research Centres

Established in 2010, SOASCIS is now a steadily growing graduate centre with an international outlook that has the appeal of attracting students from many parts of the world to pursue Master’s and Doctoral studies on various aspects of Islam and contemporary issues. The Centre hosts frequently public lectures by internationally renowned Islamic academics discussing the latest issues in Islamic studies in the contemporary world. Through its programmes and public seminars, the Centre hopes to generate Islamic thinkers and intellectuals who can share and express their views and thoughts on contemporary issues.
The establishment of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (IBER) highlights the importance of biodiversity and environmental studies to enhance knowledge on biodiversity and environmental awareness. The functions of IBER focuses on developing biodiversity research in Brunei, disseminating knowledge for environmental awareness and conservation and helping to meet the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to which Brunei Darussalam is a party by accession.
The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) was established in January 2012 with research clusters focused on Borneo Studies, South China Sea Studies, popular culture in Asia, economic and financial integration in Asia and human/capital movements in Asia. Given the country’s strategic location, its political stability and UBD’s growing emphasis on research and development, IAS is an ideal home for scholars and practitioners engaged in research on Asian affairs.
The Centre for Advanced Material and Energy Sciences (CAMES) primary purpose is to conduct research on energy and functional materials for sustainable living. CAMES provides a platform for researchers from various fields to come together to conceptualise ideas, and find solutions to problems pertaining to energy and advanced material.
The UBD Centre for Advanced Research (CARe) was set up in 2013 with the following objectives: To identify and develop several research areas of relevance to public policy and with enormous potential to make important contributions to the well-being of the citizens of Brunei; To produce high quality research that can contribute to social policy and the public; To develop high quality, longitudinal, comparative datasets in niche areas such as social indicators, family, ageing, health, youth, poverty, crime, and others identified as relevant for Brunei Darussalam; To serve as a Social data resource centre for the country; To build linkages and develop collaborative projects with renowned survey research centres on the international level; To design, develop and provide high quality training to graduate students and research personnel from the public and private sectors
The Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) provides research and training on issues related to leadership, innovation and advancement in Brunei Darussalam. ILIA aims to be the premier national institute for the promotion and understanding of responsible innovative leadership and to develop outstanding real world leaders in public, private and social sectors through the provision of training and consultancy.
The e-Government Innovation Centre (eG.InC) was established on 4th June 2011, with a vision to build ICT human capacities and provide consultations to the Government on integrated strategic directions towards e-Government. eG.InC conducts research conduct research on national innovation system, with particular emphasis on building human capacities and promoting public service deliverables. The Centre has facilitated the collaboration and linkage of government, industry, and academic to support successful implementation of e-Government.
